Top 10 Favorite Songs from Movie Soundtracks: Introduction
|Music is one of the most important things in my life. There isn’t a single thing that can relax my spirit or make it soar more than music can. And strangely enough, my introduction to music, especially when it came to different styles and artists, was rather stagnant for a while. Back when I was 7 years old I mostly had to deal with what little music my mom already had on hand from her collection: which included things like ABBA, Classical Gas and Instrumental collections; the Celtic violin band, Leahy; John Tesh, and a ton of Yanni albums.
And you may find it surprising, but I have become a massive fan of Yanni. His music is evocative, imaginative, and incredibly clever in much of its composition. I’ve even come to love a few of ABBA’s songs like “So Long” and “Waterloo.” But for the most part, I never got around to listening to much music outside of this very sparse collection. I don’t even recall ever grabbing a radio and turning it to any of the pop-stations. So, strangely enough, most of the music that I listen to now, and in fact most of my absolute favorite songs, come from Films. Even now when I go see a movie, undoubtedly I will watch something that will have a song in it that is just so damn awesome that I have to own it. But then I’ll turn around and try to listen to Pandora for a while to track down some cool tunes, and nothing of even remote interest will pop up for ages, if at all. So I have come to trust that when I’m due for some new music to add to my I-Tunes queue, movie soundtracks will always be there to help me out.
Today, we will begin talking about my Top 10 Favorite lyrical songs: songs built on lyrics or words, be they opening themes, musical numbers, or pop songs that were packaged with the films for general audience appeal. Hey, everyone has to hear these songs somewhere first.
Now the catch is that since this blog is devoted to the obscure and unique, and is intended to broaden your movie viewing interests, I will NOT be including any famous songs from award-winning musicals or any of the well-known Disney films; even if I may love things like “Me Ole Bamboo,” “Moses Supposes,” “A Friend Like Me,” or “Under the Sea.”. Oh, there are a few songs from Disney films that will be included here, but probably not the ones you’re thinking of. If I simply gave you all what you’d expect from a Top 10 Movie Song list, I wouldn’t be doing my job.
More than any other facet of film, this is probably one of the best things I can talk about in a casual sense, because I am able to share my emotional and personal experience with these songs with you; and hopefully, some of you will share your experience with these films and their music with me as well.
So please join me for this journey as we go through my Top 10 Favorite Songs from Movie Soundtracks.
